Christmas Box Distribution

christmasbaskets2013

For many, many years our congregation has distributed food boxes for our community at Christmas.  The past several years have been a time of economic stress for our area.  We make an effort to given about three to four days worth of food, as well as food for Christmas dinner in each box.   Again, this takes the help of the entire congregation.

The third Sunday of Advent our congregation has the "March to the Manger" right after the children's Christmas Program.  This gives our members and friends an opportunity to bring food or monetary contributions for our Christmas boxes, and lay them at the altar.

A total of 38 families received baskets this year.

The Baskets included hamburger and ham, canned goods and other packaged foods along with Vouchers to be redeemed for dairy products. This provided food for a Christmas dinner and at least 3 more days.

Food donated from the March to the Manger and credits from the year’s HyVee Flyer Days helped reduce the cost of food for the Baskets.

The boys from Cub Scout Pack 104, Boy Scout Troop 104 and their families collected over 200 items of food that were added to the Baskets.

The day of distribution Mission team members and helpers arrive at the church early to finish packing the boxes with perishable items, such as meat, fruit, fresh vegetables, etc.   The family are given a certificate to a local grocery store for dairy products and eggs.  Volunteers load the boxes and gifts into cars, and others make sure everyone gets the right box and gifts.

Buddy Bags

The Buddy Bags Program helps provide extra nurishment during weekends for those children receiving free school lunches during the week.

We provided over 400 Buddy Bags to Lincoln School students in 2016. We also collect school supplies so the teachers have them for students.
